HOW I FEED MY BORDER COLLIES
My Feeding Philosophy
Nutrition plays an important role in the health, growth, and wellbeing of every dog. While there are many different ways to feed dogs successfully, I believe that providing fresh, high-quality ingredients gives my dogs and puppies the best possible foundation.
I am passionate about learning about canine nutrition and continually researching ways to support the health of my dogs. My goal is not to promote a single feeding method, but to provide balanced nutrition using quality ingredients and a practical approach that works for my dogs and lifestyle.
What My border collie Dogs Are Fed
At Bordermeade, my dogs are primarily fed a combination of homemade raw food, Lyka, and Frontier Pets.
Homemade raw feeding allows me to have complete control over the ingredients used and provides a wide variety of proteins, organs, vegetables, fruits, and other nutrient-rich foods. While preparing meals takes time and planning, I enjoy knowing exactly what goes into my dogs' bowls.
I also use Lyka and Frontier Pets as convenient fresh food options. These provide balanced nutrition and are particularly useful when life gets busy or when travelling. Having flexible feeding options allows me to maintain consistency while still providing high-quality nutrition.
What my border collie Puppies Are Introduced To
My puppies are introduced to a variety of fresh foods as they grow and develop.
As part of the weaning process, puppies experience different textures, flavours, and ingredients while learning to eat independently. This early exposure helps create confident eaters and allows puppies to transition more easily into their new homes.
I believe introducing variety early in life helps puppies become adaptable and encourages healthy eating habits as they mature.
Raw Feeding – Pros & Considerations
Raw feeding has become increasingly popular among dog owners and can be a rewarding way to feed when done correctly.
Potential benefits may include excellent coat condition, dental benefits from appropriate raw bones, variety in the diet, and the ability to control ingredient quality.
However, raw feeding also requires planning, research, safe food handling practices, and an understanding of nutritional balance. It may not suit every owner or lifestyle, which is perfectly okay.
The most important thing is that your puppy receives a balanced diet that meets their nutritional needs and works for your household.
Choosing the Right Diet for Your border collie Puppy
There is no single feeding method that suits every dog owner.
Some families choose fresh food diets, while others prefer commercial raw foods or premium kibble. Each option has advantages and challenges.
When your puppy goes home, I am happy to discuss the feeding routine they have been following and help guide you through the transition to the diet that best suits your circumstances.

What I like about Frontier Pets:
Easy and convenient

The Goal
My goal is simple: healthy dogs, healthy puppies, and informed owners.
Good nutrition is only one part of raising a healthy Border Collie, but it is an important one. Combined with appropriate exercise, training, socialisation, veterinary care, and enrichment, a balanced diet helps support your puppy throughout every stage of life.
