Border Collie Collapse (BCC)
What is Border Collie Collapse?
Border Collie Collapse (BCC) is a condition that can affect some Border Collies during intense exercise.
It may cause:
• Weakness
• Loss of coordination
• Wobbling or collapse
Episodes usually happen during or shortly after high-intensity activity such as herding, agility, or ball chasing.
Although it can look alarming, most dogs recover fully within a short period.

What Causes It?
The exact cause of BCC is still not fully understood.
Research suggests that both:
• Genetics
• Environment (such as heat, stress, and exercise intensity) may play a role.
Unlike some other exercise-related conditions, there is currently no simple genetic test available for BCC.

How Is It Different From Heat Stroke?
BCC is often confused with heat stroke, but they are not the same.
Dogs experiencing BCC:
• Typically recover quickly
• Do not show ongoing illness after an episode
Heat stroke, however, is a serious medical emergency and requires immediate veterinary care.
What This Means for You
Most pet Border Collies will never experience BCC.
When it does occur, it is usually linked to:
• High-intensity activity
• Overexertion
• Environmental factors such as heat
With appropriate management, affected dogs can still live full and active lives.
My Approach to Health & Breeding
Health is a priority in my breeding program.
While BCC does not currently have a definitive genetic test, I:
• Carefully select breeding dogs
• Focus on temperament, resilience, and overall health
• Follow responsible breeding practices
My goal is to produce puppies that are well-balanced and suited to real-life homes—not just high-intensity working environments.
When to Seek Advice
If your dog shows signs of:
• Weakness during exercise
• Wobbling or collapse
• Unusual fatigue
You should stop activity immediately and consult your veterinarian.
